A View From Ringside - Philadelphia, “The Conquest Tour”

It was a game of “can you top this?” Ten matches on the card and six legitimate main events meant the Ring of Honor stars would have to stand out in the most dramatic of ways this past Saturday in Philadelphia. After the show, I said each half of the “Conquest Tour” event would be a standout card on its own, both worthy of VOD purchase.

Here are some of my thoughts from the best live event I have seen in my six years in ROH.

What made this card so great to me was that the wrestlers in each match didn’t feel pressure to have to follow what preceded them. They trusted their instincts and training to put forth the showcase the fans wanted. Speaking of the fans, they were electric the entire night!

Dalton Castle officially kicked the card off by sending a message to Kenny Omega. “The Party Peacock” made it clear that he wants a match against “The Cleaner”.

Adam Page also has a clear mission and that is to get revenge on BJ Whitmer. Did Cedric Alexander forget that BJ Whitmer’s “Decade” made him their first target? Jonathan Gresham showed me he’s more than just a scientific grappler in a wild brawl with Page as a partner.

“Moose Machine” or “WarMoose”? Whatever you call the trio of Moose and War Machine they are imposing and I think Stokely Hathaway will know who to call if Moose ever needs tag partners. Matt Taven sat in on commentary during their match against The Briscoes and Cheeseburger, returning to the site of his horrific knee injury for the first time since surgery and let us in on the timetable for his return.

In the week leading up to his Philly return, IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion KUSHIDA was quoted in “Tokyo Sports” saying he wants to challenge for the ROH World Championship. Based on what we saw him do against ACH, I wholeheartedly believe that KUSHIDA would be more than capable of challenging for and winning that title.

We saw the unveiling of the “Best Meltzer Ever”. Photos on Twitter don’t do it justice. The Addiction may have the answer for the Young Bucks and the rest of the tag team division in ROH.

Speaking of tag teams, I hope no one has forgotten about The Briscoes. They are the greatest tag team in Ring of Honor history and their plans to become the champs for a ninth time aren’t lost on War Machine. The current champions feel they are not complete until they finally beat “DEM BOYS”!

Before the event, Cheeseburger and the ROH production teamed were filming a new commercial for his T-Shirt and it might wind up being the wildest and most creative ad ever seen in ROH.

Jay Lethal is the greatest wrestler in the world today. He has no equal and until someone beats him for the ROH World Championship, my opinion on that will not change. Matt Sydal belongs in the hunt for the title and Saturday’s outcome did not change that fact either.

In Saturday’s game of “can you top this?”, the results were important to the individual matches but the event as a whole showed that whether the ROH stars found success or not, the effort they put out proved to me again what I know to be true. Ring of Honor is the best Pro Wrestling on the Planet and it’s not even close.

See you in Dallas for Supercard of Honor!
