  3. NEWTOWN, Conn. — A lone gunman killed 26 people at an elementary school here, including 18 children, in a terrifying early Friday morning shooting spree.

The Associated Press and local media reported the shooter, an unidentified adult male, was also dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School. A second person was in custody. Two handguns were recovered at the scene. Mayor Mark Boughton said several victims had been taken to local hospitals.

Groups of students — some crying, some holding hands — were being escorted away from the school by their teachers. Some witnesses reported up to 100 shots.

The incident is the latest in a series of mass shootings in the U.S. this year, including Tuesday's assault by a lone gunman at a Portland, Ore., shopping mall that left two dead and one wounded.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Homeland Security adviser John Brennan informed President Obama of the shooting at 10:30 a.m. "The president is receiving regular updates as more information becomes available," Carney said. Carney said Obama would comment when more details were known.

Sandy Hook is in a residential, wooded neighborhood about 60 miles northeast of New York City. It has 39 teachers and about 650 students. A reverse 911 call went out to parents warning of an incident. Parents were being reunited with children. But, NBC Connecticut reported, police were searching the area behind the school with guns drawn.

Terese Lestik was relieved to find her 5-year-old daughter, Eva, unharmed.

"I heard a boom-boom,'' Eva said of the gunshots she heard earlier.

"I'm horrified,'' said Terese Lestik. "I just pray for whoever is hurt."

Alexis Wasik, a third-grader at the school, said police were checking everybody inside the school before they were escorted to the firehouse. She said she heard shots and saw her former nursery school teacher being taken out of the building on a stretcher, but didn't know if the woman had been shot.

"We had to walk with a partner," said Wasik, 8. One child leaving the school said that there was shattered glass everywhere. A police officer ran into the classroom and told them to run outside and keep going until the reach the firehouse, The Hartford Courant reported.

Dozens of state troopers were on the scene assisting local police. Heavily armed police gathered in front of the school around 10:45 a.m., and a number of stretchers were set up.

    So sad

The one picture I seen, the kids looked terrified out of their minds.
  4. I'm sick to my stomach. Stuck at work in tears wanting to go home and hug my kids.....

NEWTOWN, Conn.— A shooting at a Connecticut elementary school today left 27 people dead, including 18 children, the Associated Press reported, citing an official.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way. Another official, speaking on condition of anonymity for the same reason, said the gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown was killed and apparently had two guns.

At least 27 people, including possibly 14 children, were killed, CBS News reported, citing unnamed officials.

Sources told The Hartford Courant that there are at least 20 shooting victims. Many of the shootings took place in a kindergarten classroom, sources said. One entire classroom is unaccounted for, sources said.

If the death toll is confirmed it would be one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history. It comes after a series of shooting rampages in the United States this year that have killed multiple victims.

The suspected shooter, the father of a student there, was also killed, CBS reported. The principal and school psychologist were among the dead, CNN said.

There were unconfirmed reports of a second shooter after witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots fired.

Sandy Hook Elementary School teaches children from kindergarten through fourth grade, roughly ages 5 to 10.

“It was horrendous,” said parent Brenda Lebinski, who rushed to the school where her daughter is in the third grade. “Everyone was in hysterics - parents, students. There were kids coming out of the school bloodied. I don't know if they were shot, but they were bloodied.”

Television images showed police and ambulances at the scene, and parents rushing toward the school. Parents were seen reuniting with their children and taking them home.

“This is going to be bad,” a state official told Reuters, requesting anonymity because the scope of the tragedy remained uncertain.

All Newtown schools were placed in lockdown after the shooting, the Newtown Public School District said.

The shooter, an adult, was dead and two handguns were recovered from the scene, NBC News reported without citing a source.

Lebinski said a mother who was at the school during the shooting told her a “masked man” entered the principal's office and may have shot the principal. Lebinski, who is friends with the mother who was at the school, said the principal was “severely injured.”

Lebinski's daughter's teacher “immediately locked the door to the classroom and put all the kids in the corner of the room.”

Danbury Hospital, about 11 miles (18 km) west of the school, had received three patients from the scene, a hospital spokeswoman told NBC Connecticut. The mayor of Danbury, Mark Boughton, told MSNBC: “They are very serious injuries.”

Stephen Delgiadice said his 8-year-old daughter heard two big bangs and teachers told her to get in a corner. His daughter was fine.

“It's alarming, especially in Newtown, Connecticut, which we always thought was the safest place in America,” he said.

The superintendent's office said the district had locked down schools in Newtown, about 60 miles northeast of New York City. Schools in neighboring towns also were locked down as a precaution.
  7. I honestly don't know what to say, that's a hideous thing for anyone to do.
  8. Jesus Christ! WTF is wrong with these people. If you hate your life kill yourself! Kids aren't even safe anymore. This world is completely fucked!

Well now it's become the worst Mass Shooting in American history. Just disgusting

We have a thread on this. But thanks for sharing...

    I'm so ill about this...
  11. I hope they post No info on the shooters.... Don't glorify these assholes!

    Is there?
  13. Sorry I didn't read this thread first, I was just so pissed that i started my own thread. This is what I keep reading, "guns don't kill people, people kill people" This may be true, but there is no doubt when the count is 30+ that a gun helped.
  14. I also think it's insanely distasteful that CNN is interviewing the little kids.
  15. This is horrible
  16. Know what this country needs? More guns. You see the problem here wasn't that the gunman had a gun. No no no you've got it all wrong. The issue is that those kindergarten students weren't armed to defend themselves!

Guns, guns for everyone! Little Timmy would have taken out this suicidal prick before he got off his first round if he had been properly trained with a 9mm at birth like he should have been!
  17. BREAKING: Shooter identified as Ryan Lanza, mother was teacher at school. He killed her, too.
  18. I hope he's hanging by his nuttsack in the hottest pit of hell
  19. How old was he? It would make a little bit more sense to me if he was 16 or 17. still terrible and he is a miserable pos, but it would add up to me more

So awful, how someone could ever do something like this is beyond me :sad1:
