WWE opened this week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown with Roman Reigns challenging Shinsuke Nakamura for the Intercontinental championship. It’s a match that came from nowhere, considering the two haven’t been feuding recently. This came together after some tweets from Sami Zayn, Nakamura’s mouthpiece, complaining about Reigns being drafted to the blue brand first.
I’m not sure how that resulted in an immediate title shot, but at least they didn’t go the route of “pin the champion to get a title shot against that same champion.” In the end, it didn’t matter. There was no pinfall.
That’s because Baron Corbin (he, too, tweeted) showed up to the party, still angry about The Rock embarrassing him a couple weeks ago and taking it out on Reigns. His interruption caused a disqualification, giving Roman the win but ensuring Nakamura retained his championship.
So it goes with WWE.
Daniel Bryan ran out to help Reigns, so we may be getting a Reigns-Corbin program and a Bryan-Nakamura program coming out of this.
