Ever since Brock Lesnar dropped the Universal title last year at SummerSlam 2019, the main wrestlers vying for that championship have been Seth Rollins, Braun Strowman, Bray Wyatt, Daniel Bryan, and now Goldberg. Let’s take a look at how each of those men earned a shot at the gold.

Rollins walked out of SummerSlam as the Universal champion. His first challenger in line was Braun Strowman. They won the hot potato tag titles together, but it was always clear that Strowman was hyper-focused on Seth’s Universal title. On the Aug. 26 episode of Raw, there was a backstage segment where all Strowman did was silently stare at the title draped over Rollins’ shoulder. With Braun’s gaze locked in, Rollins took that to be a challenge, and he accepted. The match was set for Clash of Champions.

One week later, before the Clash of Champions pay-per-view even took place, Bray Wyatt earned a Universal title shot for Hell in a Cell 2019. How did Wyatt earn this title shot? He merely taped himself playing with a bunch of puppets, one of which was modeled after Vince McMahon, and announced that he was next in line to face the winner of Rollins vs. Strowman.

Fast forward to December, and Daniel Bryan earned a shot at Wyatt’s Universal title. Bryan did this by winning a triple threat match against Miz and Baron Corbin.

Finally, Goldberg will be wrestling for the Universal title at Super Show-Down in Saudi Arabia on Feb. 27. After roughly half a year away from WWE, Goldberg appeared via satellite on SmackDown and admitted that WWE champion Brock Lesnar was a little too busy to face him, so he’ll instead pursue the Universal title. Goldberg then earned the championship match by declaring that Bray Wyatt was next.

So let’s review how these wrestlers earned their Universal title shots, and see how easy it is to accomplish.

All Braun Strowman had to do was stare at the title. That’s it. Even you or I can do that. Difficulty: 1/10

Bray Wyatt didn’t even step foot into a wrestling ring when he announced that the next title shot was his. Even you or I can do that. At least he went through the trouble of adding some puppets as part of the presentation: Difficulty: 2/10

Daniel Bryan defeated Miz and Corbin in a triple threat match. I won’t speak for you on this one, dear reader, but I highly doubt that I can do that. Difficulty: 6/10

Goldberg didn’t even step foot into a wrestling ring or use puppets when he announced that the next title shot was his. Even you or I can do that. Difficulty: 1/10

Strowman’s uncanny method of earning a title shot required the least effort, while Goldberg and Wyatt took the more proactive approach of simply announcing themselves as the next challenger. I don’t know what the hell Daniel Bryan was thinking when he took the hard way and actually competed in a wrestling ring to earn his Universal title match.

The final tally is that three out of these four examples of earning a Universal title match are so easy that even you or I can do it.

Looking over the last several months, I’m convinced that getting a match for the Universal championship is one of the easiest things in the world. With this context in mind, how do you plan to earn your future shot at the Universal title, Cagesiders?
