Things really suck right now for the Robert Stone Brand on NXT. Whether it’s losing clients or being run over by a tank, Stone just can’t seem to catch a break these days.

On the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez discuss a theory about Robert Stone that may explain the purpose of these comedy segments:

Meltzer: “I think it’s obvious what this is supposed to be.”

Alvarez: “Well obviously he’s Tony Khan. It’s been obvious from day one.”

Meltzer: “The Robert Stone Brand pre-dated Tony Khan. But in fact, the idea of this guy incompetently trying to recruit people, and just being the biggest pussy in the world...The first time I saw Robert Stone as Tony Khan was an interview that never aired on television. This is when he had Dorian Mak, who is not even with the company anymore, and Riddick Moss...He did this promo and it’s all about analytics. When I saw that promo...that’s when I realized that that’s the deal. I think it’s pretty clear that that’s what this is. It is what it is. That’s what you do in a wrestling war. It’s childish, but wrestling wars are childish. I’m sure it will go both ways at some point.”

Alvarez: “Brodie Lee!”

Meltzer: “Brodie Lee. Yeah, that’s true too.”
This theory sounds like a big stretch to me. I don’t really see how one promo (from last year) about analytics, current recruitment difficulties, and being a pushover make it so obvious that Robert Stone is parody of Tony Khan, the head honcho of All Elite Wrestling.

Then again, I was very certain that AEW’s Brodie Lee was a parody of Vince McMahon, but it wasn’t as clear to some fans, and Brodie Lee himself denied that it’s true.

AEW performers have taken plenty of shots at WWE, most recently with Taz characterizing the promotion as running a “sloppy shop” in regards to COVID-19 testing, as well as Kenny Omega poking fun at the leaked finish of the Keith Lee / Adam Cole match from The Great American Bash. So it’s only natural to expect NXT will fire back with their own shots when the time is right.

But Robert Stone as a parody of Tony Khan? I’m not seeing it, at least not yet.

What do you think about Meltzer’s theory, Cagesiders?
