While there was some talk of Bill Goldberg going after Roman Reigns and the Universal championship, he showed up on Monday Night Raw this week and challenged Drew McIntyre for his WWE title. That match will happen at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view on Jan. 31, 2021.

So what about Reigns?

On Friday Night SmackDown this week, Adam Pearce booked a Gauntlet match for the main event to determine who would go on to challenge Reigns for his title at the big show. This upset Reigns, and, apparently through some Paul Heyman string pulling, eventually resulted in Pearce joining that match.

It started with Sami Zayn upset, cutting a promo about how unjust it all is and how unfair he’s being treated. Rey Mysterio quickly pinned him to get him out. He tried to follow that up by defeating Shinsuke Nakamura but he was submitted by “The Artist” via armbar. Baron Corbin hit the scene to lay Mysterio out before he could leave, keeping that program going. He proceeded to get pinned by Nakamura after the Kinsasha. Daniel Bryan was out next, and he put up a hell of a fight but he, too, fell to the Kinsasha.

Talk about heating up Shinsuke.

That left, of course, the one and only Adam Pearce.

This was a set up all along, of course. Reigns and Jey Uso hit the scene and laid everybody out, eventually putting Pearce’s lifeless body on top of Nakamura’s lifeless body and instructing the referee to count the fall. That gave Pearce the win and set him up for a title match.

What a great "win" by @ScrapDaddyAP, who will now face @WWERomanReigns at the Royal Rumble! #SmackDown pic.twitter.com/ObSpiKmHoB

Talk about cooling Shinsuke off.

But seriously, what the hell.
