  1. Before all his health complications, Ric Flair was interviewed by Sports Illustrated. Flair talked about a number of wrestling related topics before revealing a very interesting detail about the first ever SummerSlam.

Flair revealed that he was indeed going to Main Event the first ever SummerSlam against the then WWE Champion, Randy Savage. However, this never happened as Flair found it difficult to leave the NWA and the four horsemen behind him.

Here’s what Flair said in that interview:

“It’s true. I was on my way to work for Vince McMahon and wrestle Savage at the Garden. My contract was up and Vince McMahon had been in touch with me. But I decided my best move was to remain in the NWA because I was so attached to my friends in the Four Horsemen. I thanked McMahon for the offer. I just couldn’t get myself to leave. I was too attached to my friends down there and too loyal to the NWA. Ultimately, it worked out, and I ended up working for Vince later. I respected Vince so much for asking me, but at that point, I just could not find a way to leave.”

The main event of SummerSlam ended up being a tag-team match between the team of Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan going up against Ted DiBiase and Andre The Giant with Jesse Ventura as the special guest referee.
