When I was a young wrestling fan, I was swept up in Hulkamania. I hated heels and loved faces. It was the typical way a very young person likes wrestling.

As everyone knows, my favorite wrestler of all time is Ric Flair. That will never change. But I may have never become a fan of Flair if it wasn't for Rick Martel.

I was young and Martel was in the Strike Force tag team with Tito Santana. Martel turned on him and became the evil Model Rick Martel.

Now, I hated the Model gimmick. But for some reason, I still loved Martel. I supported him in the feud with Tito and honestly, he became my favorite WWF wrestler for a while. And I felt weird because I was liking a heel.

Now, the obvious thing is that I was a young gay boy and Rick Martel was a very handsome man. This was back when most wrestlers were big and not defined very much. Rick was not like that. However, I don't think I was attracted to him. I honestly think that I liked him because the man was a damn good and underrated wrestler.

Liking a heel made me begin liking other heels. I liked HBK when he turned. I liked Mr Perfect. And that led me to be open to Ric Flair as well. And because I like Martel as a heel, it sort of broke the barrier for me. I no longer cared about liking a heel or a face.

You know, I think the Ultimate Warrior may have been the second biggest influence. I always hated him. He was a terrible, worthless human being. It is disgusting that they have an award named after that man. I hated him even before I met him. No matter who the heel was, I routed for the heel against him.

It's weird, though. I think Martel, who is pretty forgotten by the world, was the biggest influence on my love for wrestling. Liking heels allowed me to like wrestling more and he did that for me.

Your one time AWA Champion who wrestled 60 minutes against NWA Champion Ric Flair.

Martel had a memorable feud from 1990-91 with Jake "the Snake" Roberts which was hot for several months until Jake beat him in a blindfold match at Wrestlemania VII. In a memorable segment in the Brother Love show a blind Jake, who was grabbing for Martel, accidentally DDT'd Love instead. The crowd went wild!

The problem is, after his feud with Roberts was over "The Model" gimmick went stale, with Martel losing to Ultimate Warrior, Mr. Perfect, Lex Luger, and Tatanka. The only noteworthy feud he had post-Jake was with Shawn Michaels in a heel vs. heel match at Summer Slam 1992 which ended in a double count-out.

Agreed. I think he could have done better just as Martel, without the gimmick. But I understand how he didn’t fit in with the plan of going forward with younger guys.

I really enjoyed his random and super brief stint in WCW and TV Title "feud" with Booker T for some reason. Maybe it's just cuz I was always a WCW guy, idk, but even with all the great things he did in his career, that's what has always stuck with me when I think of him.

Teach you about Rick
Summerslam 92nand his match with HBk lives long in the memory . He was nwa champ right? Good gimmick in WWF and could wrestle
He was AWA champ for over a year and a half. Flair was NWA Champion and they had a champion vs champion match in Tokyo that I love.

If anyone wants to watch it, here is a really clear version but it's in Japanese :
Here is an English version, but it's not very clear:

WCW had a lot of talent on the roster so it was fun seeing a lot of lower card stuff because they had guys wrestling that could be on the upper cards elsewhere. I also enjoyed that feud.
